Chapter 9

By the time Katerina crawled into bed that night, it was only a few hours before dawn. The endless day had finally come to a close, but no matter how hard she tried the queen found herself unable to shut her eyes. Too many faces were parading past in the darkness. Too many unanswered questions were calling out her name.

How could everything have ended so badly? She stared unblinkingly at the ceiling. With how much time we spent planning? With how long we had to prepare?

Strangely enough, it wasn’t the assassination attempt she was thinking about. It wasn’t the missing vampire delegation, or even the fact that two of the diplomats had inexplicably died before properly digesting the cheese course. She was thinking about later. She was thinking about Dylan.

We’ve had so long to get used to the idea. He’s had so long to get used to my name.

The first time the frightened queen had revealed she was actually the missing Damaris princess, she thought Dylan was going to walk away from her right then and there. Standing in the middle of the war-torn wilderness, ravaged by members of her own family, there seemed very little reason for him to stay. Even after he’d agreed. Even after he’d selflessly decided to dedicate himself to her cause, there had been a silent distance between them. An invisible wall keeping them apart. In the end, the only thing that had broken through was that they happened to fall madly in love.

But just being in love didn’t erase decades of bloodshed and death. Loving her didn’t mean he’d forgive the rest of her family. Forget the wretched curse of her name.

But Kailas was under a spell, she thought furiously. What right does he have to hold that against him?

A surge of anger bubbled up in her chest as she remembered the look on his face. As she replayed his exact words. We’re gathered here because of him. The five kingdoms are divided because of him. This is Damaris bloodshed.

It was something about the way he said the word. The edge he gave to her name. It was as if he’d been able to compartmentalize it as long as it was just the two of them. As long as her twin stayed safely on his side of the castle; as long as the outside world kept its problems at bay.

But now all those problems were staring them right in the face. And with the discovery of two dead bodies in the course of one night, it was hard not to find a person toward whom to direct all that blame. Especially when the perfect person happened to be sitting just two seats down.

She didn’t blame him. Even if she was angry. Even if he’d used the death of her father as a barb in Kailas’ side. From the minute she’d found her brother chained up in that cell, she’d realized forgiveness would rest upon each person individually. They could not be swayed either way.
